Welcome

I am an Associate Professor in the Department of Politics and Associate Professor (by courtesy) at the Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy at the University of Virginia. Before coming to UVA, I was a faculty member in the Department of Political Science at the University of Houston. I received my Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Prior to my doctoral work at UNC, I received a Master’s Degree in Political Science from Appalachian State University. My research focuses on legislative behavior, state politics, and methods of social network analysis. My research has appeared in journals like American Political Science ReviewThe Journal of PoliticsLegislative Studies Quarterly, and State Politics and Policy Quarterly.

My dissertation research was supervised by Thomas Carsey. Tom passed away in February of 2018 after a battle with ALS. Tom’s impact on me, my work, and so many of his students is hard to put into words. In memory of all Tom did for his students, the State Politics and Policy Section of the American Political Science Association has endowed a travel award for graduate students in his honor. You can donate to this award here.

You can order a copy of my coauthored book with Jeffrey Harden, Indecision in American Legislatures, published by the University of Michigan Press as a part of the Legislative Politics and Policymaking Series here.

You can find a copy of my CV here.

You can find me on Google Scholar here.

You can find appendices to my articles here.
